HUTS ON THE HILL
Huts on the hill overlooks rolling Waitaki fields and backs onto the Waianakarua River. The clients spent time in backcountry huts and wanted to emulate the smaller modular forms for their new home perched on the top of the hill.
The form was divided into three separate pavilions each twisted to give a different aspect and allows the home to expand and contract depending on the number of inhabitants. All habitable spaces were positioned to maximise solar gains and views while the service areas hug the southern side of the home.
The master suite has its own pavilion at the eastern end of the home while the guest wing with a central living pavilion in the middle reducing wasted circulation throughout the home. The links between the pavilions provide additional intimate spaces to dwell in before entering the higher vaulted ceiling in the living area.
The cladding was selected due to its low maintenance and economic qualities while also providing nostalgic qualities of a back country huts. The clients have planted over 100 native plants surrounding the property which over time will bring the native flora and fauna back to these rolling hills.
